Health Canada has announced a recall of sunscreen products due to the “potential presence of fungal contamination” in affected lots.
The agency is recalling the cream “Santegrity Impeccable Skin Sunscreen Foundation,” sold across Canada. The recall affects both wholesalers and retailers.
The Las Vegas-based company issued the recall after discovering an odd odor and “unacceptable microbial mold counts,” according to a detailed recall notice posted on Santegrity's website.
“This recall was initiated after some tubes of lot 115BU experienced separation, off-flavors, and common mold (species: Aspergillus sydowii) growth several months after proper initial batch release testing,” the statement read. “As a precaution, we have expanded the voluntary recall to other identified lots (manufactured between September 2023 and March 2024) while we investigate the cause.”
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Aspergillus sydowii can cause allergic skin reactions and related symptoms.
“Additionally, use on open wounds or sunburned skin may cause primary fungal skin infections. Contact with the eyes may result in ocular infections,” the agency said. “Primary Aspergillus skin infections in immunocompromised individuals should be medically treated. At the time of recall, there had been no reports of adverse events.”
The lot number can be found on the back of the tube, on the top crimp line where the tube is sealed. If you find you have any of the affected product, discontinue use immediately. Previous batches are not expected to be affected.
The affected batches are:
Ivory — 107IV (Exp 04/25) – revised from 106IV
