Good morning, Evanston.
A team of volunteers watches as a chick falcon at the Evanston Public Library attempts its first flight. “Peregrine falcons are the fastest birds in the sky,” says chick watcher Walter Kitundu. “A friend of mine likens a chick to a toddler who’s just been given the keys to a Ferrari. They have a lot to learn.” Sadly, some of the young birds don’t survive. Kitundu snapped this photo of the falcon’s father, Coach Kevin, feeding his son, Noordin, on a rooftop in Carlsonville.

City Council voted Monday to support staff efforts to secure a $2 million federal grant for ongoing renovations at the Hilda’s Place homeless shelter. The shelter, run by Connections for the Homeless, located in the basement of Lake Street Church, will be closed during renovations. Once it reopens as year-round housing, Interfaith Action of Evanston plans to end its emergency nighttime shelter system.

Founded in 1996, youth soccer program JaHbat FC is committed to building a diverse club for young athletes. JaHbat is an acronym that represents the diverse backgrounds of the club’s first players: Jamaica, Americas, Haiti, Belize, Asia/Africa and Trinidad. “Like the name says, a diverse club — ‘one country, one club,’ is a beautiful sport,” co-founder Kevin Francis told Roundtable’s Andrew Katz. Today, JaHbat has more than 20 teams and more than 400 players.
