Honda has declared a recall affecting 66,846 vehicles in Canada, announced on Tuesday, due to potential issues with the front passenger airbag sensors. The impacted models include Accord, Civic, CR-V, Fit, HR-V, Insight, Odyssey, Ridgeline, as well as Acura MDX, RDX, and TLX, spanning model years from 2020 to 2022. The concern arises from the front passenger weight sensors, responsible for deploying the front airbag only when detecting the weight of an adult passenger.
Honda identifies a risk stemming from a capacitor within the printed circuit board of these sensors, which could develop cracks, leading to internal short circuits. This vulnerability is attributed to a manufacturing plant disruption of a tier-2 supplier, prompting the tier-1 supplier to utilize a base material for the circuit board that lacked sufficient verification for its intended function.
The consequence of a short circuit may result in the inadvertent deployment of the front passenger airbag during an accident, particularly if an infant or child occupies the front passenger seat, elevating the potential for injury. Honda estimates that approximately one percent of the recalled vehicles may harbor this defect.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to vigilantly monitor the passenger airbag indicator and the SRS warning light, which may remain off or illuminate, respectively, in the event of a short circuit or airbag malfunction.
Honda notified dealers of the issue on the preceding Friday, with affected vehicle owners slated to receive notifications in the forthcoming month. In the event of the SRS warning light activation, owners are urged to promptly visit a Honda or
Acura dealership for inspection and potential repair, with assurance from Honda regarding the availability of service parts despite their limited quantities. Furthermore, the company extends the possibility of reimbursement to owners who incurred expenses for rectifying these issues independently.
