This event is a book launch and discussion about Abraham Newman and Henry Farrell's upcoming book, “Underground Empire: How America Weaponizes World Economy.”
The panel discussion will discuss the sustainability of these tactics, the weaponization of the global economy, how different major and emerging powers are responding, and the role the UK should play in both exploiting and mitigating these tactics. We are planning to discuss.
Introducing speakers and chairs
Henry Farrell (@Henry Farrell) is the SNF Agora Professor at Johns Hopkins University SAIS, the 2019 Friedrich Siedel Prize in Political Technology Award recipient, and the former editor-in-chief of The Washington Post's Monkey Cage. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Farrell has written for publications such as the New York Times, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Boston Review, Aeon, New Scientist, and The Nation.
Abraham L. Newman is a professor in the Georgetown University School of Foreign Affairs and Government. He is the recipient of his 2022-2023 Berlin Prize and his work has appeared in The New York Times, Financial Times, Washington His Post, Nature, Science, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Harvard His Business His Review, Politico, etc. Published in major media.
Anne Pettifor (@ampettifor) is a political economist, author, and speaker. Her most recent book, The Case for the Green New Deal, was published in hardcover by her Verso imprint in 2019. She is the director of her PRIME (Policy Research in Macroeconomics), a network of economists promoting Keynesian monetary theory and policy. The role of the financial sector in the economy. Leslie Vinjamuri (@London Binjamuri) is Professor of International Relations at SOAS University, London, with research interests in US foreign policy, international order, geopolitics, and human rights. She currently leads her research initiative on rethinking multilateralism. The recovery of the United States, China, and the world. The global impact of threats to U.S. democracy. She is also the director of Chatham House's United States and Americas Program, and is also the dean of the Queen Elizabeth II Academy. Leslie received her bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University, her master's degree (Distinction) from LSE, and her PhD from Columbia University. She also taught at her LSE and Columbia University and held fellowships at Harvard University and her LSE.
Nikhil Kalyanpur is an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at LSE. He studies issues at the intersection of international political economy, business-government relations, law, and global governance. More specifically, it analyzes how the proliferation of global rules and legal forums serves as a mechanism for targeting channels of economic protection and political competition.
