The original series has many loyal fans, and so does one of its many spin-offs, Special Victims Unit. It follows a group of specially trained NYPD detectives who form the Special Victims Unit.
Like any good procedural drama, the series follows the investigations they face as part of the city's sexual crimes, including harassment and sexual assault.
Law & Order: SVU has been on our screens since 1999, and with its 25th season airing in the US alongside a new season of SVU spinoff Organized Crime, the series shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. . .

The main cast of SVU has remained relatively constant throughout its 25 seasons, but things were shaken up in 2011 with the departure of main character Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), and the detective is now starring in his own spinoff. Appearing in “Organized Crime.''
The SVU cast is led by Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson, and we can probably expect some regular faces like Ice-T as Finn and Peter Scanavino as Sonny.
However, we do know that some of SVU's previous regular faces are set to reappear in season 25, as Kelli Giddish is set to return in the season 25 premiere.
Giddish starred as former detective Amanda Rollins, who first appeared in season 13 and left the series in December 2022. Since then, Giddish returned in the SVU season 24 finale, where fans learned she was teaching criminal activity at Fordham University, but her life has been tough and now that's not very exciting.
So, is there a chance that Rollins will return to the SVU team? We don't know in what capacity Giddish will reappear, but we'll have to wait and see if she forms part of a larger subplot that brings her back to the series more regularly.
Kevin Caine also appears this season as Detective Terry Bruno. Although he no longer has to work after winning a large sum in an unfair dismissal case, he returns to work with people he knows well.
Regarding his return, Kane told TV Insider: He feels like these people are there for the same reason as him, and he feels a kind of kinship with them. ”
The following cast members will be returning for Season 25 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit:
Mariska Hargitay: Olivia Benson Ice-T: Odaphin “Fin” Tutula Peter Scavino: Dominic “Sonny” Carisi Jr. Demore Barnes: Christian Berland Octavio Pisano: Joe Velascotelli Serpico: Tommy McGrath Chief Kevin Kane: Detective Terry Bruno Peter Scavino: Sonny Carisi
One person we know won't be returning for Season 25 is Molly Barnett (Detective Grace Muncy), who has been on the show for less than a year.
News of Burnett's departure was announced in May 2023 (via Deadline), and with the current gap in the SVU team, a new character or Giddish could come in to fill the role.
What will Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 25 be about?
The exact details of the series are being kept secret for now, but similar to previous seasons of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Olivia Benson and her team will investigate the city's most gruesome sexual crimes. It is expected that some will be addressed.
The last time we saw SVU, there was an epic crossover finale with organized crime. Olivia and Elliot team up again to take down the criminals at the center of a shadowy website promoting “rape and murder for hire.”
After the team finally shut down the site and identified the culprit, the finale saw Detective Muncie, played by Burnett, quit, leaving SVU to take a position on the task force offered to her by McGrath (Terri Serpico).
As for what happens in the new series, Rollins will return in the Season 25 premiere, so we can expect to learn more about her life post-SVU, but we'll also learn more about how she came back to the team. Could she – could she bring in criminals? What about them? We'll have to wait and see.
