Oh, Carolyn: My teenage daughter doesn't want to go anywhere, at least not with her parents or family. She was looking forward to a school trip to Europe and was having a great time.I suggest road trips, visiting family out of state, amusement parks, beaches, mountains, etc., and responses range from “meh” to “yuck.” We finally have the money to enjoy a vacation and want to give our daughter some fun experiences before she heads off to college in a few years, but paying a ton of money for a trip only for her to be cranky and rolling her…
Highlighting a range of issues from child survival to educational attainment and exposure to violence, the global dashboard will help policymakers, health practitioners and the public track progress across several key factors that affect children's health and futures. Currently, 4.9 million children under the age of five die each year, almost half of whom die within the first month of life. Current trends mean that 59 countries will miss the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target for reducing under-five mortality. In light of these statistics, at the 77th World Health Assembly, countries committed to accelerating efforts to improve maternal and…

Geneva Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has announced that it will suspend its medical activities in Rakhine state in northern Myanmar due to an “extreme escalation of conflict” between ethnic armed groups and the military. Clashes have been ongoing in Rakhine state since the Arakan Army (AA) attacked security forces in November last year, ending a ceasefire that had largely held since the 2021 military coup. AA fighters have seized control of large swaths of territory, putting further pressure on the junta as it battles the opposition in other parts of the country. On June 27, MSF announced that it was…
CNN  — CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. The views expressed in these commentaries are their own. With President Joe Biden’s first halting, marble-mouthed words, my heart and my hope that America will dodge a second hit of former President Donald Trump sank — even lower than the minimal expectations most of us had for Biden. It is one thing to joke that all Biden had to do to ease voters’ minds was to stay somewhat alert for the duration of the debate. It is another thing to see him…

In recent years, the fermentation boom has revolutionized the way we enjoy food in some of the world's best restaurants. Looking back a century, food trends were already commonplace: refrigeration. In 2012, the Royal Society declared refrigeration the most important invention in the history of food and drink. In her latest book, Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves, author, New Yorker contributor, and Gastropod co-host Nicola Twilley explores the cold chain and how keeping food cold has transformed the way we eat. Evan Kleiman: I'm so glad you're back. First off, tell me how much of…
In a study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers conducted an 8-week randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effects of consuming a plant-based meat analogue (PBMA) diet (PBMD) versus an omnivorous animal-based meat analogue (ABMD) diet (PBMD). Using linear mixed-effects models, the study of 82 participants found that effects on dietary fiber, potassium, sodium (all increased in the PBMD cohort), and dietary trans fat (increased in the ABMD cohort) varied by dietary exposure, but no significant improvements were observed in cardiometabolic health biomarkers (lipid lipoproteins). Contrary to marketing promises and the authors' hypotheses, these findings highlight…
Ethan Bronner Northern Israel is a series of ghost towns, with homes in ruins and forests burned by Hezbollah missiles, while parts of southern Lebanon have been reduced to rubble by Israeli bombing, displacing tens of thousands of people from both sides.
