Torontonians far and wide will be ringing in 2023 this weekend.
Those who want to make plans for the first day of the new year, however, will want to keep in mind that Sunday is a statutory holiday in the province.
Here is a list of what is open and closed in Toronto on New Year’s Day in 2023.
NEW YEAR’S DAY – SUNDAY

- Rabba Fine Foods is open 24/7
- Independent City Market stores at 111 Peter St. and 3080 Yonge St. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Galleria Supermarket at 7040 Yonge St. from 7 a.m. to 12 a.m., 865 York Mills Rd. from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Wellesley and Bloor streets locations from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Whole Foods from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- CF Markville from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Toronto Eaton Centre from noon to 7 p.m.
- Vaughan Mills from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Toronto Premium Outlets from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Square One from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- All Cineplex movie theatres
- The Bentway Skate Trail from noon to 9 p.m.
- Toronto Zoo from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- CN Tower from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Ripley’s Aquarium from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Ontario Place from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- AGO from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the ROM and Aga Khan Museum from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
CLOSED
- Banks and Canada Post offices
- Loblaws, Zehrs, and No Frills
- Those who shop at T&T, Fortinos and Shoppers Drug Mart are encouraged to look at their stores’ websites, as hours vary by location
- Costco stores
- Most CF malls, including Fairview, Sherway Gardens, and Shops at Don Mills
- Yorkdale Shopping Centre stores, but the following mall restaurants will be open: Joeys, Yu Seafood, Pickle Barrel, The Cheesecake Factory, and Moxies
- Dufferin Mall, Scarborough Town Centre, and Bayview Village
- All LCBOs and Beer Stores
- Canada’s Wonderland
New Year’s Day is one of the few times each year most of the city shuts down.
All government offices and banks will be closed. Mail delivery will pause on Jan. 2.
Here’s a listing of what else will be open and closed on Sunday, the first day of 2023.
City services
Most City of Toronto services will be closed on New Year’s Day, while emergency services will still operate.
All city-run libraries and museums will be closed Jan. 1 and 2. Holiday hours for recreation centres will vary. Check with your local centre for their schedule.
Select outdoor skating rinks may be open and some may offer supervised skating.
Since New Year’s Day falls on a weekend, the city designates an alternative day for staff to observe the holiday. This year, that day is Monday, Jan. 2.
Those who have their garbage collected on Monday will have it collected on Tuesday instead. Similarly, those who have their bins collected on Tuesday will have it collected Wednesday instead.
Drop-off depots are closed Monday.
Grocery, alcohol stores
LCBO and Beer stores across the province will be closed.
Select grocery stores will be open on New Year’s Day. Check with your local grocer for their hours.
Recreation
Art lovers in the city can still hit the major museum spots New Year’s Day.
- The Art Gallery of Ontario will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- The Aga Khan museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- The Bata Shoe museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- The McMichael Canadian Art Collection will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- The Royal Ontario Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- The Ontario Science Centre will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If art’s not your thing, take a stroll at one of Toronto’s zoos:
- The Toronto Zoo will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- The High Park Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Riverdale Farm will also be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Movie Theatres
Cineplex Odeon, Imagine, Fox, Revue and the Hot Docs cinemas will all be open.
Pharmacies
Some Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall locations are open on New Year’s Day. Check your local location for information.

- CF Toronto Eaton Centre will be open 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- CF Markville will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m
- Pacific Mall will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Promenade Mall will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Square One will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Toronto Premium Outlets will be open 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
