Eternal War (TBA)
Perhaps the best story dealing with space travel at relativistic speeds is Joe Haldeman's Forever War. Partly written in response to the patriotic (and slightly fascist) Starship Troopers, this novel uses relativistic time dilation as a great metaphor for troops returning home during the Vietnam War. There is. The film uses time dilation to depict returning home from battle and discovering the broader social changes that have occurred within the country, but there are also plenty of space wars. In short, this is perfect movie material.
Film rights to the book have changed hands since 1988. Directed by Ridley Scott, the plan had long been to make it a 3D spectacle to rival Avatar (which also featured time-extended space travel, but you'd do that) ) You'll have to read a lot of behind-the-scenes material to find out). However, the rights expired in 2015 and it was quickly snapped up by Warner Bros. with the intention of turning it into a Channing Tatum vehicle. The movie is said to be still in development, but like a spaceship traveling at near the speed of light, time moves slowly in development hell.
and honorable mention
As of this writing, MGM has just announced the release date for the film adaptation of Project Hail Mary, an extrapolation of Mars author Andy Weir's novel, starring Phil Lord and Chris Miller. I'm sitting in the (two-seater) director's chair. Starring Ryan Gosling, the film is a hard science fiction story about an astronaut who travels to a nearby star to find the source of a mysterious alien lifeform that is darkening the sun.
Unlike Eternal War, time dilation is not a big part of the story other than to emphasize how isolated the main characters are, but it is still mentioned in the book and is an important plot point. forming a point.
Outside of movies, a group of developers who previously worked on Mass Effect games announced Exodus, an action RPG. It's a seemingly hard sci-fi take on space opera, where players endure time dilation as they move from system to system. Maintain the system as epochs pass. But after a lot of searching, I found exactly 5 complete movies that take advantage of time dilation, and 3 of them fake science (if you know of any others, let me know in the comments (This was not intentional.) Drive engagement. I just want to see a movie!).
Of course, many of the stories of space travel still reach directly into hyperdrive, but embracing space travel allows people to see far beyond their years, and allows space-time to evolve more than any other way. Not only does it open up opportunities to exhibit much more bizarre behavior. SF creation. You can also realize how big our universe really is.
