CLEMSON, S.C. – Mike Becchetti hit a two-out, two-run game-winning homer in the ninth inning of Game 2 to lead Georgia Tech baseball to a 14-12 victory in Friday's Game 4 doubleheader against Clemson. Ta. Afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (28-16, 12-11 ACC) scored seven runs in the final two innings of Game 2 to upset the fourth-place Tigers (35-10, 16-7 ACC).
Due to inclement weather in the area, Georgia Tech will have Saturday off and return for the series finale against Clemson on Sunday, May 5th. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
Game 2: Georgia Tech 14, Clemson 12
Georgia Tech fell behind 7-2 in the 6th inning, but did not give up, scoring 1 run in the 6th inning, 4 runs in the 7th inning, and 7 runs in the 8th and 9th innings to make a comeback.
John Giesler hit his eighth home run of the season in the sixth inning, starting a long ball. Drew Burress then hit a three-run bomb in the seventh inning, breaking Georgia Tech's freshman home run record with 19, and Matthew Ellis hit a solo home run off Clemson RHP Drew Titsworth. .
Then, in the 8th inning, Becketti hit an RBI homer and hit a three-run homer, Burress's 20th home run of the season, bringing the lead to one point.
Becketti then hit the go-ahead home run, and in the ninth inning, freshman Vern Lackey hit a pinch-hit solo home run to add to the important runs.
On the mound, Tech used seven total arms to get through the second game of the doubleheader and relied on RHP Mason Patel (2-2). Patel came back with 2.0 innings, one hit and three runs, and once again showed tremendous fortitude to close out the game. -Your job is to get strikeouts in order to win.
Overall, Becketti led the way with three hits for four at bats and three RBIs on the day. Burress scored six runs with two home runs, and Giesler had a double and a home run. Peyton Green ended his high-hitting days with 2 hits in 4 at bats.
Blake Wright led Clemson in Game 2 with four hits and seven RBIs. RHP Austin Gordon (0-2) took the loss, giving up three hits and four runs in 2.0 innings.
Game 1: Georgia Tech 4, Clemson 11
The Tigers had 10 hits with two outs and nine RBIs, and No. 4 Clemson's two-out hit destroyed Georgia Tech in the first game of the doubleheader.
Tech fell behind early, but after a single by Van Lackey, Bobby Zmarzlak scored on an error and came off the bench. John Giesler and Peyton Green then hit two runs in the third inning. Matthew Ellis' solo home run in the seventh inning rounded out Tech's offense.
Cam Jones and Giesler each finished the opening game with two hits.
On the mound, RHP Aiden Finatelli (5-2) suffered his second loss of the season, giving up seven points on seven hits in the first two frames of the game. Tech then used RHP Ben King, RHP Carson Ballard, and RHP Jackson Gaspard to close out the game.
Clemson was led by Blake Wright, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. RHP Lukas Marstead (4-0) won the game with 4.2 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run.
