HAVERHILL — Fourteen students at Whittier Tech Marine Services Technology Shop earned their Yamaha on Board certificate last month, school officials announced last week.
Yamaha representative Mike Husni visited the school on April 23rd and 24th to present the students with certificates showing that they are qualified to work on Yamaha boat motors.
Husney also spent time with students working under the tutelage of Marine Services Technology Instructor Mike Murray, offering advice when students asked for industry tips. Mr. Murray also provided each student with a starter tool kit bag.
“Don't be afraid to ask questions, focus on your skills, and work hard. There are many opportunities for growth in this field,” Husney told the students, adding, “You can build on what you have learned so far. You've started with everything you need to know, and you'll continue to learn from Mr. Murray.'' The skills he's teaching you will set you up for success. ”
After successfully implementing an adult education program, Mr. Whittier launched the Marine Services Technology Program. Current second graders are the first class to pass through the store.
Students who choose to pursue this path will learn how to operate, maintain, repair, rebuild and install onboard systems, as well as hull maintenance and repair, marine canvas manufacturing and repair, gas and diesel engine operation and repair. , learn how to weld and manufacture precision metals. .
You will also gain relevant qualifications, learn how to safely operate a boat and obtain your boating license. Students have the opportunity to earn their captain's license during their senior year.
According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, Massachusetts' recreational boating industry has an economic impact of $4.4 billion and employs more than 20,000 men and women. But the industry is experiencing a significant labor shortage, not just in Massachusetts but nationally.
