“Inspect your tires for signs of damage, such as scratches, cracks, or sidewall bulges caused by potholes,” says Consumer Reports' Keith Barry.
Also, check the tire pressure and adjust it to the value written on the driver's door frame. Properly inflated tires are safer, last longer, and improve your car's fuel economy.
“You can improve your car's fuel efficiency by reducing air resistance. Remove roof racks, bike racks, etc. when not in use. Don't be a hater, but sticking to the speed limit is a waste of fuel. It also saves you money,” says Consumer Reports' Alex Knizek.
Consumer Reports' tests show that 75 gallons loses about 6 miles per gallon instead of 65 miles per hour.
And when it's time to fill up on gas, Knizek says: “Many gas stations will offer you a lower price if you pay with cash, but a credit card that offers cash back on your gas bill may actually be a better deal. Especially if you: If this happens, you'll end up spending more on gas than usual in a month. ”
And if you run into mechanical trouble or a flat tire, paying for long-distance towing out of pocket can cost you hundreds of dollars.
It's worth considering a roadside assistance plan like AAA or Good Sam before you leave. Or you may already have free coverage on your car insurance or credit card.
Apps and websites like GasBuddy and Waze can help you find out real-time prices at nearby gas stations when filling up in an unfamiliar area. Many gas stations offer lower prices if you pay with cash, but if you pay cash with a credit card – your gas back perk could actually be a better deal!
