According to Allianz Partners USA, Americans plan to spend even more time on vacation this summer than last summer, which was a record summer.
Through its annual Vacation Confidence Index, Allianz found that Americans plan to spend more than $221.6 billion on travel this summer.
This is a 3.5% increase compared to last summer and a 118% increase compared to pre-pandemic summer travel in 2019.
Allianz defines a vacation as a leisure trip of at least one week to a location more than 100 miles from home.
Summer travel spending is on the rise
Allianz has been tracking summer vacation spending since 2010, when Americans planned to spend $76 billion on travel. This number was mostly on the rise, with some dips, until 2019, when Americans planned to spend $101.7 billion on summer travel.
The situation changed in 2020, when summer travel reached $59.3 billion, but in 2021 it jumped to $153.7 billion. It has been on the rise ever since.
This year, the average household plans to spend $2,843 on summer vacation, up slightly from $2,830 last year. When Allianz first started tracking his summer vacation spending in 2010, that figure was $1,653 for her. In 2019, it exceeded $2,000 for the first time, reaching $2,037.
According to Allianz, 61% of Americans plan to travel this year. In 2019, he was at 42%.
To create the Vacation Confidence Index, Allianz collaborated with Ipsos and interviewed 2,010 Americans in April. Results are weighted to reflect the demographics of the United States based on Census Bureau data.
