The Region of Waterloo has launched a new pilot project to test potential water savings from using gray water technology.
This project will implement HydraLoop water recycling technology in four new homes built by local builder Activa to see how much water savings can be achieved with HydraLoop gray water units.
“As our community experiences tremendous growth, we explore new ideas to ensure a reliable water supply for future generations and as we reach 1 million people. ” said Coun. Colleen James said.

According to the region, to reduce household water usage, gray water units will treat shower water used in the home to be reused for flushing toilets.

“New technologies are making gray water reuse more affordable and viable, and this pilot allows us to stay at the cutting edge of finding real solutions to reduce water use in the long term.” Water and Sewer Services Director Mari McNeil said in the release.
“I am proud of our team of innovative experts in the region who are dedicated to advancing sustainable water and wastewater initiatives.”
The district said it plans to test the system at homes in West Trussler over a year to help plan future water supply strategies.
