Spokane's new mayor has his sights set on bringing more high-tech jobs and industry to the area.
That's because the Biden-Harris administration has selected Spokane to potentially serve as a new American aerospace technology hub in October 2023.
“For Spokane and the region, this means the focus here is on the potential for more manufacturing jobs and the potential for more jobs in the aerospace supply chain. That's very interesting,” Brown said.
But there are 30 other newly designated high-tech districts vying for the same multimillion-dollar federal grant that will help jump-start Spokane's new aerospace hub.
To that end, Mayor Brown signed an executive order on April 10 directing new economic development priorities, effective immediately.
The new policy calls for Spokane's various departments to focus on streamlining processes that foster rapid high-tech business development.
“What is the role of local governments? Local governments have a critical role in providing all areas of permitting and infrastructure so that when the private sector is ready for investment, it is ready.” explained Mr. Brown.
Spokane began a checklist several years ago to prepare to serve as an aerospace technology hub, thanks to a group called the Inland Northwest Consortium.
The consortium launched by Gonzaga University, in collaboration with industry leaders such as Boeing and Collins Aerospace, is poised to bring the former Triumph Composites plant into operation as the new “America's Aerospace Materials Manufacturing Center.”
“And this is a very important building in the West Plains where a lot of research and development and manufacturing of small parts takes place and hopefully we can get off the ground and really continue building this aviation.” '' Spokane Community and Economic Development Director Steve McDonald predicted.
There's also plenty of room for growth within the boundaries of the West Plains Public Development Authority, with easy access to interstate and rail transportation routes.
“Therefore, this executive order demonstrates that we are redoubling our commitment to the city’s economic development strategy, promoting job creation and employment opportunities, and committed to continuing to diversify our local economy.” swore Mr. Brown.
Spokane area leaders recognize the opportunity to ride a new wave of aerospace industry in the Pacific Northwest, and are implementing several initiatives to ensure the region becomes a strong contender. It has already been launched.
