May 18 (UPI) — The State Department is warning Americans traveling abroad of “the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and acts of violence against U.S. citizens and interests.”
A global alert issued on Friday warns of possible violence against LGBTQ+ people.

“Due to the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and acts of violence against U.S. citizens and interests, the State Department urges U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased vigilance,” the State Department's warning reads.
“The State Department recognizes the increased potential for violence inspired by foreign terrorist organizations against LGBTQI+ people and events and advises U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased caution. ”
The report warns Americans abroad to remain vigilant in areas frequented by tourists, “such as Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ people.”
CBS News, citing sources familiar with the situation, said the alert was in response to threats by ISIS fighters against upcoming Pride events in parts of Europe.
Pride month takes place in June.
U.S. diplomats have been instructed to email travel warnings to all Americans registered with the State Department while abroad, POLITICO reported, citing official sources. .
The news comes after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared Friday an International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia.
“The United States reaffirms its commitment to promoting the safety and dignity of LGBTQI+ people. This is not just a moral obligation, but a critical component of advancing our national interests.” Blinken said on the X program.
