In the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Report released on Tuesday, Japan was ranked third on the list of destinations, with high praise for its natural and cultural resources and transport infrastructure.
Topping the list is the United States, followed by Spain in second place. Japan became the highest ranked country in the Asia-Pacific region.
The previous report, released in 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic, placed Japan in first place, but the organization used different criteria then.

Looking at individual evaluation criteria, Japan ranked second in cultural resources such as ruins and recreational facilities, and fourth in land and port infrastructure such as roads and railway networks.
Japan ranks high in non-leisure resource areas as well, as it has many large companies and prestigious universities, but it scores relatively low in price competitiveness, tourism services, and infrastructure indicators.
In the overall ranking, which evaluated 119 countries and regions, France came in 4th place, followed by Australia in 5th place. Among other Asia-Pacific countries, China ranked 8th, Singapore ranked 13th, and South Korea ranked 14th.
