Weapons detector pilot survey data (Image from ACPS)
A survey of Alexandria students and parents found that the majority of respondents wanted weapons detection systems permanently installed in schools, WUSA9 reported.
The survey asked the Alexandria City Schools (ACPS) community several questions about the Weapons Reduction Pilot Program: Of those surveyed, 508 believed the Weapons Reduction Program should continue, 209 felt neutral, and 358 did not want the program to continue.
While parents overwhelmingly voted in favor of the program, there was strong agreement that it should continue, student opinions were more mixed.
Respondents also said they believed the pilot program would support a safe environment after school and would like to see it implemented in elementary schools, but faculty and staff have not encouraged it. Respondents had mixed opinions about whether they would feel safer in school.
ACPS said there has been a 71% decrease in weapon-related incidents in schools since the detectors were installed.
The school board is scheduled to vote on making the weapons detectors permanent at its meeting on Thursday, June 6.
