Anyone planning to head to the beach this Memorial Day weekend should keep in mind that the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has recommended against swimming, surfing and wading at five area beaches due to high bacteria levels.
The ministry's warning includes:
Santa Monica Canyon Creek at Will Rogers State Beach (100 yards up and down the coast from the creek near Will Rogers Tower 18), Mother Beach in Marina del Rey (entire swimming area), Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach (100 yards up and down the coast from the public restrooms), Santa Monica Pier (100 yards up and down the coast from the pier), Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro (entire swimming area).
All locations were found to have bacteria levels above health standards when last tested, according to the county.
Meanwhile, the Water Quality Department lifted previous warnings for two area beaches after recent samples found water quality levels to be within state standards.
The beaches that were cleaned are the Temescal Canyon storm drain at Will Rogers State Beach and the Pico Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica State Beach near Tower 20 South Santa Monica.
Information on beach conditions is available 24 hours a day through the county's beach closure hotline at 1-800-525-5662. Maps of affected locations and more information can be found here.
