According to Grand View Research, the global luxury travel market is estimated to reach $1.38 trillion in 2023. The industry is expected to grow as wealthy individuals seek to visit exotic locations and enjoy new experiences. However, it's worth pointing out that not all expensive or luxurious vacations meet the expectations of high-end customers.

What are the most common luxury vacation regrets travelers have? We spoke to Aaron Sutherland, founder of Jetsetter Lifestyle, a luxury travel agency that uses insider information to create unique travel experiences, to find out what indulgences his past clients have regretted.
Private Island Resort
When you first hear about private island resorts, the idea seems appealing, but the isolation can make it monotonous and not worth the high prices.
“While appealing in theory, many private islands lack the diversity of activities, dining options and cultural experiences that sophisticated travelers desire,” Sutherland said.
These luxury getaways often start at $15,000 per night and are just not worth it as they offer little value for the limited experience.
A typical luxury cruise
“Mass-market luxury cruises, while comfortable, often offer predictable itineraries and a lack of personalized service,” Sutherland said. “The crowds and standardized sightseeing tours can be unappealing to luxury-minded customers.”
This luxury experience isn't necessarily worth the cost, as many feel they don't get much out of $10,000 per person.

Overrated bucket list destinations
Many dream travel destinations are hailed as must-have bucket list ideas, but in reality they're disappointing.
“Certain destinations, such as over-touristed European capitals or crowded safari parks, can feel disappointing in reality,” Sutherland said.
What are some specific examples of overrated destinations that travelers often regret?
1. Santorini, Greece
“Santorini is undoubtedly picturesque, but it is often let down by crowds, inflated prices and unattractive beaches,” Sutherland said.
Alternative: If you're looking for something similar to the Cyclades, with fewer tourists and a more authentic, once-in-a-lifetime experience, try Milos or Folegandros.
2. Bali, Indonesia
Bali's fame has led to tourist overload and a loss of its original charm, leaving many visitors disappointed.
Alternative: If you want a quieter, more laid back Balinese vibe, try the Gili Islands or Nusa Lembongan.

3. Tulum, Mexico
While the town of Tulum remains beautiful, rapid development has made accommodation expensive, the beaches crowded, and many travelers feel that influencers have ruined the place.
Alternative: For a more relaxed, less commercialized Mexican beach resort, try Holbox.
4. Machu Picchu, Peru
“Although it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, overcrowding and strict regulations can detract from the experience,” Sutherland said.
It remains a popular spot, but many luxury tourists point out that it's too crowded.
Alternative: Choquequirao, which offers a similar experience to the Inca Trail with far fewer tourists.
5. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Travelers comment that Dubai's attractions can feel artificial because they are modern and lack cultural depth.
The alternative: Oman, for a more authentic Arabian experience, with stunning landscapes and a rich historical heritage.
Sutherland adds: “The high cost of accommodation and activities (over $10,000 per week) often doesn't match the real experience and can be marred by overcrowding and commercialization.”
“Instagrammable” Retreat
Seeing images of a destination on social media over and over may make you want to visit, and multiple wellness facilities or general retreat facilities may feel like they're worth visiting when you first hear about them.
“Despite their appeal on social media, many wellness and yoga retreats prioritise aesthetics over substance,” Sutherland said.
What are some specific examples of luxury retreat vacations that travelers often regret?
1. Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa
The retreat feels crowded and commercialized and lacks the personal feel of a truly luxury retreat that travelers are looking for.
The alternative: Sensei Lanai, a Four Seasons Resort, offers highly personalized, technology-driven wellness experiences on a secluded Hawaiian island.
2. Red Mountain Resort, Utah
Despite offering stunning views and outdoor activities, the accommodations and amenities have been described as outdated.
The alternative: Amangiri in Utah offers an ultra-luxurious desert getaway with world-class spa treatments.
3. California Ashram
Tourists regret this retreat due to the ashram's strict rules and modest accommodations that are not to everyone's taste.
The alternative: Ananda in the Himalayas offers a more luxurious and holistic wellness experience.
Sutherland said the focus on photogenic and superficial experiences could leave clients feeling unfulfilled, even though it costs more than $5,000 a week to stay at the retreat.
What to look out for on a luxury vacation
Sutherland, founder of a luxury travel agency, spoke about three characteristics that make a holiday worthwhile for those with money to spare:
Specially selected limited items
You want to avoid crowded destinations and mass-market experiences and focus on unique, secluded places where you can relax.
Personalized itinerary
If you have the funds for a luxury vacation, you'll want to create an itinerary that matches your passions (art, adventure, culinary exploration, historical exploration, etc.).
Insider Access
The goal is to work with travel agencies with local connections who can offer special experiences not available to the general public, which can range from private museum tours to dinners prepared by Michelin-starred chefs.
