A freight train derailed on a main line between England and Scotland, leading to 'do not travel' warnings and rail services being cancelled and delayed.
According to National Rail Enquirys, the incident happened on Wednesday night on the West Coast Main Line between Carlisle and Oxenholme Lake District.
Some lines have been closed, and those that remain open operate with very limited train service.
Train operators Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express issued warnings, asking passengers not to use their services for journeys between Preston and Scotland on Thursday.
Ticket holders can postpone their travel until Friday or travel with other operators.
Network Rail apologised to passengers affected by the derailment and warned that services would be disrupted for the rest of the day.
The company said specialised repair teams were on site and were committed to ensuring the safety of the railway.
