The Bowen Agricultural Alliance (BAA) will begin the process of dissolving itself this autumn, with its two remaining directors, David Griffiths and Lisa Holland, planning to work together under the umbrella of the Bowen Island Food Resilience Society (BIFS) to strengthen its work on the island.
For the past 12 years, under the direction of Sarah Haxby, BAA has been widely recognized as the group that created the Bowen Island Farmers Market, where local farmers, gardeners and artisans work with the community to support food resilience and promote information about how to grow food on Bowen Island.
BIFS is an organization that brings together backyard and market growers, climate visionaries, community-minded Islanders and volunteers working collaboratively to build a resilient food system. Current efforts include Grafton Commons Community Garden, education programs in partnership with Island Pacific School, Island Discovery Learning Centre and Bowen Island Community School, other community institutions such as talks at the Bowen Island Public Library, and articles in Undercurrents.
We use science-based, regenerative methods rooted in Indigenous knowledge and stewardship, caring for ecosystems – both natural and social – from restoring soil biodiversity to building collaborative communities.
The Bowen Island Farmers Market is a perfect supporting event to the BIFS effort. The market takes place every weekend (mid-May to mid-October) from 10am to 12pm at Bowen Island Community School (BICS).
BIFS would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to David and Lisa!
