A new ranking of Canada's most pedestrian-friendly cities for tourists has Ontario regions taking five of the top 10 spots.
The study, by online language learning platform Preply, ranks Canadian cities that can be enjoyed entirely on foot, without needing public transport, taxis or Uber. It used Google Maps route planner to determine walkability in terms of distance, time and steps between destinations, and grouped the top five tourist attractions in the cities.
Of the 21 Canadian cities ranked, Halifax, Nova Scotia topped the list, with Victoria, British Columbia, coming in second.
While no Ontario cities made it into the top two spots, the province has a significant number of cities on the list, taking third, fourth, fifth, ninth and tenth places.
Here are the top 10 most walkable cities in Canada (according to a very specific methodology).
Halifax, Nova Scotia Victoria, British Columbia London, Ontario Ottawa, Ontario Toronto, Ontario Vancouver, British Columbia Winnipeg, Manitoba Quebec City, Quebec Kitchener, Ontario Vaughan, Ontario
Ontario's dominance in the rankings is largely due to the survey methodology, which emphasizes distance from key locations over overall walkability.
This is evidenced by London beating Toronto in walkability and notoriously car-centric Vaughan ranking in the top 10 most walkable cities.
