Cast your line and you've got dinner. James Cain of New York used a powerful magnet to cast his line and reeled in a big buck.
Cain has previously salvaged bicycles, jewelry and guns from New York City's waterways. He also handed over a safe full of credit cards to police. On May 31, he pulled a safe full of $100 bills.
Cain and his girlfriend, Barbie Agostini, were magnet fishing in the lake at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park when Cain cast the magnet about 80 feet, as he usually does. There was a loud click, a signal that the magnet had snagged some sort of buried treasure. Its weight was a clue that the object was metal.
Kane pulled the safe out of the water, and Agostini recorded him opening the slimy box and removing a grime-covered bag of money.
The couple estimated that the safe contained $100,000 worth of bills, but the safe provided no clues as to its rightful owner.
Kane and Agostini called police to report their discovery, and officers said there was no evidence of a crime.
“They gave it to us,” Cain said. “It was a pick-it-up kind of thing.”
That's the good news! The bad news is that the money is in such bad condition that we can't determine its value.
Agostini said the cash stacked at the top and bottom of the safe, which were more exposed to water, suffered the most damage, with banknotes “falling apart in pieces.”
Mr. Cain plans to take the dirty money to the Bureau of Printing in Washington to be cashed, and he and Mr. Agostini hope to recover some of it.
What would they buy if they could spend some of their loot? A new vehicle, maybe. They also want to upgrade the equipment they use to videotape Kane's magnet fishing adventures.
The Bible teaches that God pursues lost sinners as diligently as a woman searches for her lost coin. God forgives us and cleanses us by clothe us with His righteousness. Jesus says there is joy before the angels of God over even one sinner who repents (Luke 15:8-10).
Did you know that people are more valuable to God than a safe full of cash?
