The IOC is making groundbreaking, innovative changes regarding dental care for athletes competing in Paris 2024. For the first time in the history of the Games, an oral health unit will be permanently present in the French capital, offering precise and personalized medical services, including emergency care.
The new team will carry out examinations to check and diagnose possible problems, provide specialist treatment if necessary, and carry out x-rays and analyses to help prevent future problems. They will also replace mouthguards lost by athletes at the Olympics. Here we tell you what you can do to look after your dental health and what to expect in Paris.
Be careful before the tournament
You can take care of your teeth yourself before you arrive in Paris: in addition to having regular check-ups, we recommend having a comprehensive oral health check before the Olympics, so you can have peace of mind and avoid any unexpected issues that may affect your performance.
Up-to-date dental records will also help the Oral Health Department if you need to seek treatment in Paris, as they can use this as a guide to determine the best course of action.
We will be by your side during the tournament.
The Oral Health Department of the Olympique Polyclinic of Paris gives priority to emergency treatments. In order to provide you with the most accurate treatment, please bring your dental and bite records with you, even if you think they are not necessary. This will speed up your treatment and ensure that you receive the right treatment.
Located in the Polyclinic in Sector Etoile, southeast of the Olympic Village, the Oral-B Dental Clinic is open daily from 8am to 8pm for general consultations and 24/7 for emergency consultations. If you need to visit the clinic, you can make an appointment in advance.
Benefits of Mouthguards
Mouthguards are recommended for use in all combat sports and high impact sports where dental injuries may occur. Not only do mouthguards protect your teeth, they also help prevent fractures, concussions and soft tissue injuries by absorbing the impact of falls and contact with other athletes. We encourage you to test and become familiar with your mouthguard now during training and competition.
Recognizing how important this protective equipment is to performance, the Oral Health Department will provide a replacement service for any player who loses their mouthguard during competition. All replacements will match the fit of the original, ensuring no disruption to your ability to compete at your best.
