College days are memories that last a lifetime. From skipping lectures to staying in hostels and eating in messy rooms, these memories are there for a lifetime. But poor quality food in a messy hostel room can be extremely distressing. A recent post by X (formerly Twitter) revealed that a student had to eat at IIIT Hyderabad, and the food had cockroaches and flies in it. To shed light on the issue, Shashwat Goel, a former undergraduate researcher at IIIT Hyderabad, shared a series of notes on X. In one of the notes, he wrote, “Students are forced to accept the 'messy' (the right word) of their university. Having cockroaches in their food, having flies in their food, poor hand washing, is supposed to be ignored for years. The fact that there is less food than oil somehow doesn't even become a big issue. Students' complaints are ignored.” He also shared a picture of a salad full of flies. The post has been viewed over 330,000 times.

Shashwat Goel also wrote that when someone reports the issue to hostel authorities, they often shift the blame to students who ordered food through food delivery apps. “When students report feeling unwell, hostel and health authorities blame it on ordering food from Swiggy/Zomato, which is frankly much safer. This has become so unhelpful that students have given up and don't even bother to report. Plausible deniability is unfortunately all the rage,” he wrote.

Shashwat Goel said this was not an isolated incident and revealed that last year, over 40 students contracted typhoid due to contaminated water on the hostel premises. “Last year, there was a widespread outbreak of typhoid fever with over 40 cases due to contaminated water. The boys' hostel caretaker made the situation worse by threatening students to not get tested and actively spreading misinformation about the symptoms,” he added.

“As an IIT Delhi alumnus, I have seen first-hand how so-called 'top' schools fail their students. The Hyderabad campus' problems are just the tip of the iceberg. It's time to expose the corruption within the IIT system,” wrote one person who reposted Shashwat Goel's post.
