Israel – The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a deadly operation in Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, rescuing three hostages. The IDF claims the hostages were journalist Abdallah al-Jamal and his family. The IDF claims without evidence that the hostages, kidnapped by Hamas fighters at the Nova music festival, had been held captive for 246 days. Palestinian authorities have reported 274 deaths and 698 injuries from the operation, but the IDF estimates the casualties at fewer than 100. Al-Jamal, his wife and father were killed during the operation, and the IDF says the hostages were found on the third floor of a building. The IDF also claims that al-Jamal was a Hamas operative and an Al Jazeera journalist. CNN has reached out to people familiar with al-Jamal for further comment.
UNITED KINGDOM – British television presenter Michael Mosley, known for his health advice and popular documentaries, went missing on Wednesday after going on a solo walk on the Greek island of Symi. His wife, Dr Clare Bailey, expressed her sadness, calling him a “wonderful, funny, kind and intelligent man.” Greek authorities found a body believed to be Mosley's and it is being transported to Rhodes for identification. Mosley, who set out without a mobile phone, was the subject of a days-long search by police, firefighters, coastguard and volunteers. Mosley's wife said he may have taken a wrong turn while hiking and collapsed in a difficult-to-find location.
China – Footage of protests, police activity, and news of arrests are some of the real-time updates Teacher Li Is Not Your Teacher gets from ordinary citizens. None of this information can be found in Chinese state media or on the internet. Behind this deluge of updates is Li Ying, an Italian art school student who has become a key recorder of politically sensitive information in Xi Jinping’s China. His X-accounts have revealed acts of opposition and corruption that are often removed from the Chinese internet, drawing the ire of Chinese authorities. In an interview with the BBC, Li alleged that Beijing is harassing him, his friends, family and supporters through a coordinated intimidation campaign. The Chinese government has not responded to these allegations, but such tactics have been documented by activists and human rights groups.
SUDAN – At least 150 people have been killed and 200 injured in an attack by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the village of Wad al-Nour in Al Jazeera province, according to officials and witnesses. The attack was part of a year-long war that has displaced more than seven million people, when more than 40 RSF armoured vehicles stormed the village on June 5, using heavy weaponry to target mostly civilians, including women and children. Fighting continues nearby, and villagers fear further violence. Witnesses described horrifying scenes and confirmed that more than 120 bodies were buried in a mass grave.
