Name: Sandy Knox
Business: JWS TRAVEL – Travel with Sandy
Where do you live? Red Deer, Alberta and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (3 months in winter)
How long have you been a travel advisor? About nine years.
What is your specialty?
I classify myself as a Mexico specialist so I primarily sell all-inclusive packages to Mexico and the Caribbean. I also sell cruises, tours, specific itineraries, Disney. Small groups and weddings are also in my portfolio.
What inspired you to become a travel advisor?
I was looking for a career that would allow me to work remotely while spending part of the year in Puerto Vallarta, and I am grateful that this opportunity was presented to me.
What was the first trip you took?
My first travel experience was when I was 10 years old and went to Weslaco, Texas to visit my grandparents. The trip gave me the opportunity to explore a new environment. I was fascinated by the different candy options that were different from what was available in my small hometown in Canada. It's the little things that matter. We even swam in the Gulf of Mexico. It left me with unforgettable memories.
What travel trends have you seen lately?
We've found that people want to book further in advance, but also want the flexibility to change or cancel their trip if something happens. Since the pandemic, customers are also looking for more upscale options and are willing to spend a bit more for upgrades. We're also seeing more multi-generational trips being booked, prioritizing family memories.
What is the most satisfying itinerary you have ever booked?
That's a tough question. I take pride in every booking I make. I provide great customer service and it's hard to pick one trip I'm more proud of than the others. If I had to choose, I'd say I was able to put together a wedding group in under three days after another travel company took three months to do nothing. I felt like a rock star even though I only booked flights for 50 people.
What is your most memorable trip so far?
Our travels are a bit limited because we have a home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We seem to be there often and are limited in where we can go. However, the most memorable trip for me was to Jamaica. We went to an orphanage and delivered supplies to the school. The children were so grateful for what they had and clung to us as we read them stories and played games with them. It was such a heartwarming experience and one I will never forget.
What are your goals for the future?
I would like to focus on a specific area of travel. I still need to narrow down what that means for me, but it is part of my future goals so that I can have a better work-life balance, which I struggle with. I think this is common because this industry is very addictive.
What new skill have you learned recently?
I try not to take things too personally, and when changes and cancellations occur I feel sorry for the client and strive to do my best, it causes me a lot of stress and anxiety.
What would you like to change about the travel industry?
Support for travel agents. We feel like we don't get as much support from our suppliers as we used to. We work hard to support their business. I wish they would give us the same support.
What is your secret to success in this business?
Consistency is key. Even though I work from home, I prepare for my day the same way I would if I were heading into the office. This helps me stay on track. Setting goals is also important. You need something to aim for.
What is your motto?
Journey with Sandy – one journey at a time.
What is your top advice to other travel advisors?
Don't take things personally. If something goes wrong on the trip, it's not our fault. Also, be honest with your guests. If you don't know something, admit it and let them know you will find the answer. We can't know everything there is to know about the world. Be proud of yourself.
