WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) denounced abortion opponents' attempts to block women from traveling across state lines to receive critical medical care. In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Conduct, and Federal Rights, Senator Cortez Masto urged her fellow Senators to pass the Freedom to Travel for Medical Care Act, which would reaffirm that women in anti-abortion states are free to travel to pro-abortion states where they can receive necessary reproductive health care.
“I knew that invalidating Roe would only empower anti-abortion extremists to continue their campaign to control women. That's why I authored and led my colleagues to introduce the Freedom to Travel for Medical Affairs Act in response to the Supreme Court's decision two years ago,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Our bill reaffirms that women have a fundamental right to travel between state lines and makes clear that states cannot prosecute women, or those who assist them, for traveling to another state to receive the critical reproductive health care they need.”
The Freedom of Medical Travel Act underscores constitutional protections for interstate travel and provides a remedy for women whose rights have been violated. The law protects health care providers in pro-abortion states, like Nevada, from prosecution and lawsuits for providing medical services to individuals traveling from other states.
Senator Cortez Masto has been a fierce advocate for women's reproductive rights. She has championed the Women's Health Protection Act, which guarantees equal access to abortion everywhere. She has also co-sponsored legislation to codify the right to contraception and has urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to protect the privacy of women seeking reproductive health care. She has taken on one of the largest pharmaceutical wholesalers in the country to ensure Nevadans have access to abortion pills at retail pharmacies, including Walgreens.
