Resort guests hoping to take a dip in Hekla's whirlpools in late April were out of luck as an Interlake resort was closed due to a “major mold infestation.”
In its latest list of health facility closures, the province reported that Lakeview Hecla Resort was forced to close its cold pool, spa pool, hot tub, mineral spa and slide pool from April 18 to May 2.
The report said the resort, in Gull Harbour, about 182 kilometres north of Winnipeg, did not have proper ventilation to prevent mould growth.
Lakeview Hecla Resort was forced to close its cold pool, spa pool, hot tub, mineral spa and slide pool from April 18 to May 2 due to mold growth.
Lists of health-related violations at restaurants, swimming pools, water recreation facilities and body modification parlours are regularly published by the state.
Lakeview Hecla general manager Scott Lenahan did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
The resort announced in a social media post on May 3 that the facility had reopened, but did not give a reason for the closure.
Six other swimming pools in and around Winnipeg have also been ordered closed since March 26 due to poor water quality and unsafe conditions, according to the June 7 report.
Meanwhile, 10 restaurants and one grocery bakery were closed after inspectors found they had not taken enough steps to prevent rat and vermin infestations.
The report includes the restaurant Chosabi Asian Eatery on King Street and the Safeway Bakery on Corydon Avenue.

The report said the grocery chain's bakery plants prepared food in unsanitary conditions and “failed to take effective measures against the infestation or presence of rodents.”
Chosabi, which serves signature sushi burritos and Asian rice and noodle bowls, also failed to take adequate measures to control pests, the report said. The downtown Winnipeg eatery was ordered to close on May 24 and reopened on June 4.
Other establishments forced to close for various violations: Subway on Osborne Street, Delicious Pizza and Wings, Kimchi Sushi, Sushiya Restaurant, East Lake, Aristocrat Restaurant and Punjabi Food Corner.
All restaurants and swimming pools that had been ordered closed have reopened, according to the report.
