KUWAIT FIRE: At least 41 people, including several from India, are believed to have been killed in a devastating fire that broke out in a building in Kuwait's southern Mangaf district, according to multiple reports. The fire reportedly started in the kitchen on the lower floor early on Wednesday morning and quickly spread throughout the building, trapping many people.

Kuwait's deputy prime minister said 41 people were killed in the attack, according to Reuters.

Five people from Kerala were among those killed in the fire, Onmanorama reported. The building reportedly housed around 195 workers, including some from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Onmanorama said the building belongs to the NBTC Group, owned by Malayali businessman KG Abraham.
“In connection with the tragic fire accident involving Indian workers today, the Embassy has set up an emergency helpline number: 965-65505246. We request all concerned parties to contact this helpline for latest updates. The Embassy remains committed to providing all possible assistance,” the Indian Embassy in Kuwait said in a post on X.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said he was shocked by the incident and that the Indian ambassador had travelled to the camp site.
“Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait City. Reports indicate over 40 people are dead and over 50 are hospitalised. Ambassador has left for camp. Awaiting further information,” Jaishankar posted on X.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives and pray for a speedy and full recovery for those injured. Our embassy will provide all parties involved with this matter with our fullest support,” it added.

KUNA reported that the fire has been extinguished and authorities are searching the scene for evidence regarding the cause of the blaze.

“The building where the fire started was used as housing for workers and there were many workers inside. Dozens of people were rescued but unfortunately many died from smoke inhalation from the fire,” a senior police official told state television.
“We always warn and urge caution against overcrowding housing facilities,” he said, without providing details about the workers' employment status or where they come from.
Authorities say an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
