After a year-long investigation, it was discovered that the logbook, which had previously been claimed to detail the last communications between the sunken submersible and its mother ship, was a complete fake.

The records were made public last year, but the document's authenticity was questioned. The New York Times reported that the head of the U.S. government team investigating the disaster believes the records are completely fake. The team was also investigating the nature and veracity of the records, among other factors.
“Someone did a good enough job of making it seem plausible.”

Capt. Jason D. Neubauer, a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer and now chairman of the Marine Investigation Board, said he found no evidence that the submersible's passengers had any knowledge of the disaster they were about to face. “We are confident that this is a false record…. a hoax,” he said.

The logs purportedly recorded minute-by-minute communications between the Titan and its mother ship before the explosion killed five people on board: Oceangate Expeditions CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, French diver Paul-Henri Narjolet, Pakistani businesswoman Shahzada Dawood and her son Suleiman. The logs, which were published on social media and shared millions of times, even included acronyms and jargon specific to the submersible. The recordings suggest passengers were panicking and that hull alarms sounded on board before communications were suddenly cut off.
A few days after the submersible went missing, wreckage was discovered near the site of the Titanic's sinking, after which it was officially announced that the Titan had suffered a “catastrophic internal collapse.”
