LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – 8 News Now will celebrate Founders Appreciation Day on Friday, June 14, a day when staff members volunteer in the community.
One of the organizations the station supports is Three Square Food Bank, which ships out millions of pounds of food.
“Last year, more than 45 million pounds of food was distributed,” said Kate Gaines, the food bank's lead giving adviser.
Gaines said this equates to putting 37 million meals back into our communities.
“And we plan to do the same and even more this year,” she said.
People are struggling, but a daily labor of love keeps volunteers going so that no one goes hungry.
The Community Kitchen employs 30-45 volunteers who work Monday through Friday during the summer, packing more than 4,000 fresh meals a day for children.
The kids are taking part in a “Meet up and Eat Up” program at select locations across the valley, for those under 18 years old.
“We're working with a few organizations,” Gaines said.
An organization that has seen growing demand recently.
“We really rely on donations. [from] “To manufacturers and large distributors,” she said.
Businesses donate boxes of goods.
“When you give back to Three Square, you're giving back to a network of organizations,” Gaines said.
The food bank then supplies it to its charity partners.
Three Square Food Bank also accepts monetary donations and partners with over 150 local organizations to provide food to the most vulnerable.
