According to the Associated Press, French national Louis Arnault was released from prison on Thursday and returned to his home country after more than 20 months in Iran for taking part in nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini because he was not wearing a hijab.

Upon arriving, Arnault met with his family and French Foreign Minister Stephane Séjournet, according to the Associated Press.

“Louis Arnault is now free,” French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter on Wednesday, thanking “all those who contributed to this happy ending,” including Oman, who acted as a mediator between Western countries and Iran.
Arnault, a 30-year-old consultant, was detained in September 2022 along with other Europeans, according to the Associated Press.
According to French media, Arnault was accused of taking part in nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, who died after being arrested for not wearing the hijab as prescribed by security forces.

Macron also expressed concern about three more French nationals, including Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been detained in Iran since May 2022.
French authorities identified Kohler and Paris as a teachers union leader and his partner, who were vacationing in the country, and were arrested for allegedly taking part in anti-government rallies and protesting with Iranian teachers, according to the Associated Press.
The third Frenchman detained was identified only by his first name, Olivier, according to the Associated Press.

“We call on Iran to release them without delay,” Macron wrote on X.

“We are still working for their release,” Sejourné said Thursday, according to the Associated Press. “Our diplomacy is still mobilized. … It will be the next victory tomorrow. But for now we have to be happy with a great diplomatic victory for France.”
