Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday promised an immediate “ceasefire” in Ukraine and the start of negotiations if Kiev withdraws its troops from four occupied Ukrainian regions and abandons plans to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, The Associated Press reported. “We will do it immediately,” the Russian leader said in a speech at the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow. Putin's remarks came on the sidelines of the G7 summit, where the Group of Seven countries are meeting in Italy.

The 71-year-old Russian leader made the remarks on the eve of a summit in Switzerland where more than 90 countries and organisations are due to discuss a path to peace in Ukraine, which has been at war since 2022.

Russia was not invited and dismissed the meeting as a “waste of time.”
Russia now controls about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, three years into the war. Kiev says peace can only be achieved with a complete withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of territorial integrity. On the same day, Putin said Russian troops advanced on Kiev two years ago to try to force Ukraine to agree to a peace deal, and had no intention of storming the capital.

Ukraine and the West say Russia tried to seize Kiev and install a leader friendly to Russia but was overwhelmed by fierce resistance.
Putin: “No need to use nuclear weapons”
On June 8, Putin ruled out using nuclear weapons to win the war in Ukraine. “The use of nuclear weapons is possible in exceptional cases – when the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country is threatened. I don't think such cases have arisen. There is no need for such a thing,” the Russian leader was quoted as saying by Reuters. (AP, courtesy of Reuters)
