Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni voiced support for Israel on Saturday when asked why G7 countries have not condemned it for civilian deaths in attacks on Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip.
“I think we need to remember who started all this. It was not Israel but someone who killed civilians, women and children,” the Italian leader said on the final day of the G7 summit in southern Italy, referring to the horrific Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel that killed 1,200 people and triggered a bloody war.
Meloni called on all parties to work towards peace but accused Israel of falling into a “trap” in its response to October 7.

“Hamas's trap was to isolate it, and it seems to be working,” Meloni said, adding that Israel's friends “need to give a clear message to Israel for Israel's security… and Italy is doing exactly that.”
Palestinian health officials say more than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza, but refuse to give a breakdown between civilians and combatants.
Speaking on Saturday as the G7 leaders concluded a summit that agreed to provide $50 billion in loans to war-torn Ukraine, Meloni also said Russian President Vladimir Putin's offer to Ukraine for a ceasefire was mere “propaganda.”
“If President Putin's proposal is: 'If Ukraine admits its aggression and abandons the occupied territories, we are ready for peace talks,'… [it] “To me, this proposal doesn't seem particularly effective,” Meloni said.
“[It] “This seems to me more like a propaganda move than something genuine,” the conservative politician said.

The Russian president said on Friday he would “immediately” order a ceasefire in Ukraine and begin negotiations if Kiev withdraws its troops from four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and abandons plans to join NATO.
But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, one of several world leaders attending the G7 as guests, rejected the offer, arguing it was an ultimatum from Putin to cede more territory.
