A week after an Air India passenger allegedly found a knife-like metal shard in their meal on a Bangalore-San Francisco flight, the airline confirmed that a “foreign object” had been found in the meal. In a statement on June 17, the airline said the object came from a vegetable processing machine used at one of its catering partner's facilities.
“Air India can confirm that a foreign object was found in the meal of a passenger on one of our flights. After investigation, it was determined that the object came from a vegetable processing machine used at our catering partner's facility,” Air India's chief customer experience officer Rajesh Dogra said in a statement. The airline launched its investigation after a passenger posted on X that they had found a metal object, like a blade, in their meal.
“Air India food cuts like a knife. I found a blade-like metal piece hidden in my baked sweet potato and fig chaat. I only felt it after a few seconds of chewing the food. Thankfully I was not hurt,” passenger and journalist Mathures Paul said in a post. He blamed the airline's catering services, “but this incident does not add to my image of Air India,” adding: “What would have happened if the metal piece had been in the food served to my child?”
Dogra said in a statement that the airline was working with its catering partners to strengthen measures to prevent a recurrence, including more frequent inspections of processing machines, especially after chopping tough vegetables. “Air India is in contact with affected customers and deeply apologises for this experience,” he added.
This is the second incident involving meals served on long-haul flights by the Tata Group-owned airline.
Earlier in the day, a business class passenger on the airline's New Delhi-Newark flight described the journey as “an absolute nightmare”, claiming that the airline served them “raw” food and that their seats were dirty.
