British mother's weekly grocery shopping 'has Canadians crying'
TikTok user @mumlifewitherin shared what a grocery meal worth 65 pounds in the UK (about $112 Canadian at the time of publishing) looks like in a recent video posted on the social media site.
“I actually think I got a lot for that price today!” she wrote in the caption of a June 2 TikTok post.
Erin said she did her grocery shopping at Aldi, a German discount supermarket with a large presence in the UK.
For protein, she bought two packs of ham, pork belly, ground beef, lamb shoulder, chicken breasts, chicken skewers, and bacon.
Under dairy were packs of cheese slices, butter, sour cream, yogurt, mozzarella cheese, bottles of milk, and cartons of ice cream.
For drinks, she bought two large bottles of apple juice and pear juice.
Not to forget the carbs: she bought two packs of tortilla wraps, garlic bread and breadsticks.
For produce, we purchased olives, coleslaw, green onions, cucumbers, red peppers, broccoli, lettuce, salad, potatoes, grapes and strawberries.
She also bought groceries such as soup, sugar, rice, a jar of mayonnaise, cereal, chips, pasta sauce and pickles.
And of course, don't forget the egg cartons.
The fee also includes household items such as a roll of paper towels and two packs of baby wipes.
“That's it! Do you think £65 is ok? Yes or no?” the TikTok user asks at the end of the video.

Many people replied to her video and agreed, saying, “What a bargain!”
“£65 is enough, I'm not great at grocery shopping and for five people it costs £140 a week,” read another comment from a UK grocery shopper.
Another TikTok video posted by Erin in 2021 found its way onto Canadians' feeds after an account reposted it earlier this week.
In the video, Erin stitches together a TikTok video in which she asks people to show her what $100 worth of food looks like where they live.
She shocked Canadians by revealing that she had bought 73 pounds worth of groceries, which was worth $100 at the time.
“As a Canadian this actually took my breath away,” one comment read.
“Crying in Canada ðŸ˜,” another added.
“As a Canadian, it made me cry. I bought that amount at the grocery store today and it cost me $450,” said a Canadian grocery shopper.
Another commenter said they work as a cashier at a grocery store and that the meat alone Erin bought “probably cost over $100.”
Even Canadians who have spent time in the UK attest to the affordability of groceries there. Daily Hive fact-checked the testimony of former expats here.
Canadians could be experiencing eye-watering prices like these at Aldi.
Canada's industry minister said in April that the government was looking to attract 12 foreign grocery chains to the country to increase competition in the grocery sector. The two biggest names on the list were German discount grocers Aldi and Liddi.
