New Brunswick has signed a $2 million contract with Food Depot Alimentaire to purchase and distribute healthy food to 135 schools across the province this fiscal year.
“In 2020, we committed to ensuring every New Brunswick student has access to healthy meals in school,” Bill Horgan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, said in a news release Friday.
“We've delivered on that promise in the 2023-24 school year, and we're grateful for the partnership with Food Depot Alimentaire and other community partners that made this possible. We'll be investing $2 million again next school year to ensure students continue to have access to healthy foods at school.”
The contract was awarded under New Brunswick's first Procurement Strategy and Action Plan, designed to support local businesses and reduce barriers to winning government contracts.
“We are very proud to partner with the provincial government and organizations like the Breakfast Club of Canada to provide healthy meals in schools across the province,” said Stéphane Sirois, executive director of Food Depot Alimentaires. “These partnerships allow us to deliver meals to 135 schools that serve healthy meals to more than 45,000 students each month. Our vision is to live in a hunger-free New Brunswick, and helping students access healthy meals is a major step towards making that vision a reality.”
