Islamist group leader killed in Israeli airstrike in Lebanon
BEIRUT: An Israeli airstrike targeting a vehicle in the village of Al-Qiyara in Lebanon's Western Bekaa region killed the leader of an Islamist group on Saturday, a Lebanese military source told Xinhua.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said an Israeli drone fired two air-to-surface missiles at a Cherokee SUV in Qiyara, killing the driver, Ayman Hashem Ghazmeh, a field leader of the Islamic group.
Civil defense workers extinguished the fire inside the car and worked with the Lebanese Red Cross to transport the body to a hospital in the Bekaa region, Xinhua reported, adding that the source was quoted as saying.
Tensions escalated along the Lebanese-Israeli border on October 8, 2023, when the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets at Israel in solidarity with Hamas' attacks on Israel the previous day. Israel subsequently retaliated by firing heavy artillery into southeastern Lebanon.
