Students at JA Laird Elementary School learned that while the world doesn't revolve around them, they can change it or at least make it a better place for others.
With those less fortunate in mind, Ms. K. Daniel's 5th-6th grade class is holding a food and clothing drive on Tuesday, June 25th. Students are asked to bring non-perishable food items such as canned goods and granola bars (no homemade foods please) from now through next Tuesday. The public is asked to do the same on June 25th only. We also ask that donations be brought to Ms. Daniel's class rather than left at the front office.
Student Charlie Platschke told the Pioneer that the class wants to help people who can't afford the food (and clothing) they need. They'll also be accepting clothing items like hats, gloves, mittens and blankets to help keep people warm next winter. All the food will be donated to the Columbia Valley Food Bank, and some of the clothing will go to Family Dynamics.
Platschke said that while many kids these days have everything – food, clothes – some don't. “They sometimes throw half their food (lunch) (at school) in the bin. They just throw it in the bin,” he lamented.
The students said they hope to collect enough food to fill the food bank's shelves and “speed up” the donation process.
