Leading Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice Groups Launch “Abortion Access Now” Campaign, Committing $100 Million Investment
WASHINGTON, DC – On the second anniversary of the Dobbs decision, leading reproductive health, rights and justice organizations launched the Abortion Access Now campaign, pledging $100 million to advance abortion rights and access across the United States. The funding will help build a long-term federal strategy to codify abortion rights, including lobbying, grassroots organizing, public education and a comprehensive communications strategy to mobilize support and achieve change. This groundbreaking effort aims to ensure that everyone has the right to access reproductive health care without stigma or barriers.
The Abortion Access Now campaign is a collaborative effort led by the following organizations:
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) Our Own Voice: A National Agenda for Reproductive Justice for Black Women National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice (Latina Institute) National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF) National Women's Law Center (NWLC) Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) Reproductive Freedom for All United for Reproductive and Gender Equality (URGE)
The campaign released the following statement:
“We envision a future where abortion and all reproductive health care is not only legal, but accessible, affordable and free of stigma and fear. This campaign is committed to building and leading a broad, inclusive vision for abortion access, ensuring that all people can make fundamental decisions about their health and bodies with dignity and support. Together, we will ensure control over our bodies and the freedom to care for ourselves, our families and our communities.”
For decades, access to abortion has been hindered by restrictive laws, social bias, and disparities — many of which disproportionately affect Black, Latino, Asian American, LGBTQIA+, Indigenous, rural and immigrant communities, young people, and low-income people. The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade paved the way for politicians to enact extreme anti-abortion laws and enforce outdated and harmful laws.
Anti-abortion lawmakers have already banned or severely restricted abortion in 21 states, with devastating consequences. They will not stop until they have made abortion care completely unaffordable, even in states that have national abortion bans and protected abortion access. These bans have stripped millions of people across the country of their right to make personal medical decisions during their pregnancy, forcing many to continue their pregnancies against their will.
Abortion bans make pregnancies less safe by making reproductive health care more unaffordable. In states where legislators have banned abortion, clinics close, obstetricians quit, and options to manage or terminate pregnancies are greatly reduced. People struggle to access life-saving medical care for miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and other pregnancy complications.
Over the next decade, the campaign aims to expand abortion access and coverage, secure a federal right to abortion, make abortion legal again, and ensure access to abortion care in every state.
