CALUMET, Mich. (WLUC) – Calumet's food pantry continues to grow with the help of community partners.
Calumet Free Fridge & Food Pantry is working in partnership with Jim's Pizza in Calumet, which charges customers an extra dollar that goes directly to the pantry, and for every dollar donated, that customer will be entered into a weekly drawing for a free pizza.
Organizers say the program raises about $170 a month for the pantry, which spends money on meat and vegetables. About 500 families use the pantry each month, up from 450 in April.
“It's so amazing to see the donations reach so many people and make such a difference in our community,” said Ronald Lear, founder of Calumet Free Fridge & Food Pantry.
Other community partners supporting the program include the female a cappella group Noteworthy, which selected the pantry as the beneficiary of its June 13 concert.
“They perform concerts twice a year in the area,” Rea continues, “and choose a charity to donate the concert to. I was called out during the final segment of UPside, and one of the singers was so excited that the group unanimously chose Office Shop food pantry and Calumet Free Fridge as the charity program for their next concert.”
Houghton's Goodwill also plans to present the food pantry with a check later this month for funds raised over the last quarter.
“They contacted me in March,” Leah added, “They had heard about the great things happening here in Calumet and asked me if I would like to be part of their charity program. Every customer that comes into a Goodwill store is asked if they would like to round up their amount and 100% of that money goes to our food assistance program here.”
