The photo going viral shows a man looking at his kidney during surgery.
American man attends his own kidney surgery
John Nicholas, 28, was awake during his kidney transplant and watched the entire operation. Nicholas, who received a kidney from a childhood friend, was able to watch the operation because the surgeon used spinal anesthesia rather than general anesthesia.
According to an Instagram post from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the surgery took place on May 24. “During this procedure, a spinal anesthetic injection was used instead of general anesthesia. This option may allow patients at higher risk for general anesthesia to receive the transplant and may shorten the patient's hospital stay,” the post read. Nicholas was released from the hospital within 24 hours of the procedure.

A few years later, after moving to Chicago and undergoing treatment at Northwestern Medicine, John's kidney function declined. It was clear he would need a kidney transplant.
