Primaries: Westchester County Mayor George Latimer defeated Congressman Jamaal Bowman in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th congressional district, shaking up the party's progressive wing, but other US primaries also made headlines. Utah Congressman John Curtis defeated a Donald Trump-backed candidate to earn a chance to run for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat currently held by Mitt Romney. Far-right Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert won the primary for Colorado's 4th congressional district seat. Conservative commentator Jeff Crank won the Republican primary for Colorado's 5th congressional district, defeating Trump-backed candidate Dave Williams.
PIER: CNN reported this morning that an estimated 6,000 pallets of aid remain stacked on a floating pier built by the US military to transport aid by sea to Gaza civilians. CNN reported that the US military has said it is transporting about 800 pallets a day to Gaza, but that it is not enough to turn around the desperate situation civilians are facing. The Pentagon denies plans to close the pier, according to CNN.
Trial begins: Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich went on trial in Moscow today on espionage charges. Gershkovich had been held by Russian authorities for about 15 months at the time. Spectators were removed from the courtroom before the closed-door trial began. Both the Wall Street Journal and the U.S. government deny that the reporter was a spy.
Whirlpool: Reuters reported today that German company Bosch is considering whether to make an offer to buy U.S. home appliance maker Whirlpool. Whirlpool's current market capitalization is about $4.8 billion. Neither Whirlpool nor Bosch commented on the report. Reuters said Bosch is facing increasing competition from Asian manufacturers and that a Whirlpool acquisition would make Bosch more competitive.
Proclamation: President Biden today issued a proclamation pardoning former military members convicted of sexual misconduct based on their personal sexual choices. The proclamation states: “Despite their courage and tremendous sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were removed from the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Many of these patriotic Americans were court-martialed. My Administration has taken meaningful steps to resolve these issues, but the impacts of this historical injustice remain.” The proclamation will vacate the military court-martial convictions.
Spacecraft: The two astronauts bound for the International Space Station aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft may not be able to return to Earth until around July 20. They were originally scheduled to stay at the space station for just a week. Problems with the spacecraft have forced the return mission to be postponed several times. The issues include helium leaks and malfunctions of the spacecraft's thrusters.
