AAAS, in collaboration with the BioInnovation Institute (BII), has announced the creation of the BII & Science Translational Medicine Prize to recognize innovations in women's health. Applications for the prize's inaugural year are currently being accepted and will be awarded in 2025.
This new award is designed to recognize and honour scientists who have made outstanding research discoveries that have the potential to impact women's health around the world.
Relevant research topics include, but are not limited to, investigating maternal health and gynecological diseases, areas of reproductive health such as infertility, and investigating sex- and gender-specific approaches to diseases that disproportionately affect women.
The award will highlight researchers who are helping to answer questions in these areas and who are developing new diagnostics, medicines or medical devices with translational impact. Applications are also open to researchers working on solutions that can be immediately deployed to underserved populations in low- and middle-income countries.
“Translational research into women's health, which is needed to improve the health of women around the world, has historically been undervalued,” said AAAS CEO Sudip Parikh. “This high-profile award is intended to promote, advance, and prioritize this important yet underfunded research.”
Researchers of all genders, ages and career stages are welcome to apply, and all applicants will submit a 1,000-word essay detailing their most significant research findings and the translational impact of their research on women's health.
The winner will receive a cash prize of $25,000, have their essay published in Science Translational Medicine, and receive a five-year digital subscription to the journal.
Additionally, winners will have the opportunity to present the research results that earned them the award to an audience at an awards ceremony to be held in Denmark in May 2025. They will also have the opportunity to be paired with BII’s business development team to assess their eligibility for BII’s support programs.
The deadline for all entries is November 1, 2024. Find out how to enter the giveaway here.
“Science Translational Medicine is pleased to partner with the BioInnovation Institute to create a new annual award that will recognize major research advances and innovations that address unmet needs in the critical area of women's health.”
Orla Smith, Editor-in-Chief, Science Translational Medicine
The award is funded by BII, an international non-profit organization that provides early-stage funding and business development support to researchers and entrepreneurs working in the life sciences. The foundation currently runs the Women's Health Initiative, a program that incubates start-ups and projects related to women's health.
This is the second award the Science magazine family has created in partnership with BII. The BioInnovation Institute & Science Innovation Award, which will be awarded for the first time in 2022, is designed to recognize scientists conducting research at the intersection of life sciences and entrepreneurship.
“We are proud to announce this award following the success of our Innovation Prize. Women's health remains a core focus for BII and we continuously support early stage start-ups and projects in this field. We hope that this award will provide well-deserved recognition to leading researchers in this underrepresented research area,” said Jens Nielsen, CEO of the BioInnovation Institute (BII).
