LONDON , June 27, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Clarivate Plc (NYSE:CLVT), a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, today released a global research report from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™. The report integrates and interprets multiple data sources from across the Clarivate™ portfolio to highlight the academic and societal benefits of the rapidly evolving digital health environment.
Research impact on society and the economy: The digital health revolution in healthcare has highlighted rapid growth in both digital health research and patent activity. The report identifies the world's leading players and organizations, along with their collaborations, and potentially influential start-ups. Combining data from Web of Science™ and Derwent World Patents Index™, experts from ISI and the newly formed Clarivate Center for IP and Innovation Research™ provide a comprehensive analysis of the digital health sector. The analysis is presented alongside a taxonomy developed by Clarivate's Life Sciences & Healthcare analysts to break down the sector into key areas.
The study builds on a recent collaboration with Times Higher Education, and initial findings were presented at Digital Health 2024, an industry-wide event held at Stanford University in February 2024.
Digital health involves leveraging digital technologies such as mobile apps, wearables, and telemedicine to improve health and healthcare services. Expected societal benefits from accessing and leveraging digital health include improved access to and quality of healthcare, increased patient engagement and commitment resulting in more personalized healthcare, facilitating a shift from reactive to preventive healthcare, streamlining healthcare delivery, and reducing costs.
“Digital health research and innovation is exponentially growing, as evidenced by a significant increase in academic publications and patent applications,” said David Pendlebury, head of research and analytics at the Clarivate Institute for Scientific Information and co-author of the report. “The results of this study will be of interest to anyone interested in the future of healthcare technology and its societal impact, and will provide a valuable foundation for academic institutions, companies and government agencies to make informed decisions in this dynamic field.”
Key findings include:
Significant increase in digital health publications: Over the 10 years to 2022, there has been an approximately 70-fold increase in academic papers featuring the term digital health, reflecting a major shift towards the integration of digital technologies in healthcare. This has been driven recently by advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics, which precede the widespread adoption of AI technologies such as ChatGPT. A surge in digital health patenting activity: Digital health patenting activity has outpaced the increase in publications, with approximately 140,000 patented inventions identified between 2013 and 2022. This indicates a strong effort being made within the industry to secure intellectual capital and gain an advantage in the market. Corporate dominance in patenting: Our analysts highlight the presence of a diverse range of organizations side-by-side in one patent analysis, including Snap and AstraZeneca, Nike and Johnson & Johnson, and Eli Lilly and Nvidia, demonstrating the convergent and collaborative nature of the digital health field. Strength of AI patents in digital health: Mainland China, represented by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, universities, and companies, plays a pivotal role in this field. The impact of university research on digital health innovation: University research has a significant impact on digital health innovation, with research papers being frequently cited in patents, highlighting the role of intellectual property in driving advancements.
