Preferred Regions How does this work?
New travel warnings have been issued by the Canadian government for popular destinations in Europe, South America and Africa.
Tourism is at its peak in the summer as schools are out and the warmer months make it easier to travel.
While many countries are relatively safe to travel to, there are a few things to consider before you go.
The Government of Canada maintains a travel advice and advisories page to help travellers make informed decisions and travel safely outside of Canada.
They analyze trends and incidents affecting international travelers, monitor world events, and compile the latest reports from a variety of sources.
Here are some countries where recommendations have been updated:
France
Risks: Heightened terrorist threats and Olympic disruptions.
Reason: Over the past few years, France has experienced several opportunistic and planned attacks that have resulted in numerous casualties and make further attacks more likely.
The Olympics will take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, and visitors can expect increased security forces, major disruptions to traffic and travel, and large crowds and rallies.
Germany
Risks: Terror threats and disruption to football events.
Reason: There is a terrorist threat in Europe. Terrorists have carried out attacks in several European cities. A terrorist attack could happen at any time.
Germany will host the UEFA EURO 2024 football tournament from June 14 to July 14. Matches will be played in ten cities across the country. Theft and other crimes typically increase before and after major sporting events. Thieves often target tourists. Post-match celebrations and clashes between fans of opposing teams can lead to rowdy behavior.
Bolivia
Risks: Political and social tensions lead to frequent road closures across the country.
Why: Tensions reached a fever pitch this week over an attempted coup, when military vehicles entered Plaza Murillo, a historic square in the capital, La Paz, on Wednesday and tried to break into the presidential palace.
The situation remains volatile and may worsen without notice, and the advisory suggests travelers should be prepared to change their plans in case of disruptions.
Chile
Risk: Continued demonstrations and civil unrest.
Why: Demonstrations and strikes occur regularly in Santiago, especially in Plaza Italia (also known as Plaza Baquedano), but also in Valparaiso and Concepción.
The protests could lead to road closures, disruptions to public transport and clashes with police.
Politically motivated violence has broken out in parts of the Araucania and BÃo BÃo regions in southern Chile, with violent protests, barricades, looting, arson and deadly shootings.
Kenya
Risks: Terrorist threats and high crime rates.
Why: Protests related to the 2024 Finance Bill continue, with demonstrations turning violent inside and outside Parliament in Nairobi on June 25. Barricades, looting and deadly shootings have been reported.
Peaceful protests may become violent at any time. They may also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transport. Access to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport may be affected. Telecommunications and internet access may also be disrupted.
