A survey of knowledge, attitudes and perceptions regarding mental health and psychological issues among adolescents in Rohingya refugee camps and host communities
background
As the Rohingya refugee crisis drags on, the mental health and wellbeing of refugees and host community members, particularly adolescents, remains a pressing concern. Factors such as violence, prolonged displacement, limited resources and lack of access to quality mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services are severely impacting their wellbeing. In addition, the transition from adolescence to adulthood poses new challenges for young people, amplifying the impact of external factors on their mental health.
Against this backdrop, it is crucial to improve the availability, accessibility and quality of MHPSS services while tackling the stigma and lack of awareness surrounding mental health issues. The survey on knowledge, attitudes and perceptions about mental health and psychological issues among adolescents in Rohingya refugee camps and host communities (MHPSS survey) contributes to this effort by revealing insights into the mental health needs and challenges faced by adolescents in both refugee and host communities. The survey provides evidence to inform and advance adolescent-responsive MHPSS interventions and support systems that serve these vulnerable populations.
The MHPSS survey is part of the Community-Based Integrated Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services project in Cox's Bazar, implemented by UNFPA and partners with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The MHPSS survey was implemented by SANEM with technical guidance from UNFPA Bangladesh. For more information, please contact bangladesh@unfpa.org.
