Moscow:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday left for Austria after a fruitful two-day visit to Russia during which the two countries discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as energy, trade, manufacturing and fertilizers.
Prime Minister Modi began a high-profile visit to Russia on Monday to attend the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his first visit since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine.
Last night, the Russian President hosted the Indian Prime Minister for a private dinner at his residence outside Moscow.
The Ukraine conflict also came up in the discussion between PM Modi and President Putin, with PM Modi telling Putin that the solution to the Ukraine conflict cannot be achieved on the battlefield and peace talks will not succeed amid bombs, guns and bullets.
On the same day, President Putin expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his efforts in achieving a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis.
“I appreciate that the focus is on the most pressing issues, such as finding ways to resolve the Ukrainian crisis primarily through peaceful means,” Putin was quoted as saying by the state-run TASS news agency.
Prime Minister Modi was on Tuesday formally awarded the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle by President Putin in recognition of his contribution to promoting bilateral ties between the two countries. The award was announced in 2019.
When Modi arrives in Vienna, it will be the first time in over four decades that an Indian prime minister visits Austria – the last time was Indira Gandhi in 1983.
