European Rocket: The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched its first large rocket, the Ariane 6, from a launch pad in French Guiana on July 9. The test flight came after years of delays, but a malfunction occurred during the re-ignition phase, preventing it from achieving all of its mission objectives. Nevertheless, ESA has indicated it plans to continue using the design in hopes of competing with the private sector’s SpaceX and Blue Horizon spacecraft that currently launch satellites and service the ISS.
BIDEN KEEPS NOMINATION: President Joe Biden managed to retain the Democratic nomination after some tense moments on Tuesday, when many disgruntled Democrats pointed to Biden’s poor debate performance and declining approval ratings and argued that the party needed to consider a new nominee. House and Senate members, including Biden’s allies, expressed doubts about Biden’s ability to defeat former President Trump again.
Israel Strikes School: Israeli forces airstrike a school compound in Khan Yunis housing displaced people from across the Gaza Strip, killing 27 and wounding 53. Video circulating on social media shows players and bystanders rushing to help the injured during a soccer game that was interrupted by the explosion. The IDF claims to have used “precision bombs” near the school against targets who took part in the October 7 attack.
Journalist’s family murdered: A London manhunt is underway for 26-year-old Kyle Clifford, suspected of murdering the wife and two daughters of journalist John Hunt, who commentates on the BBC racing programme Live at Five. The three women were killed with a crossbow in the Herefordshire town of Bushley on 10 July. The daughters were aged 25 and 28 and the mother was 61. Police believe this was a “targeted incident”.
Alec Baldwin trial: Opening statements begin today in Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter trial. The actor is on trial for the accidental killing of cinematographer Heilana Hutchins on the set of “Lust” three years ago. The trial is taking place in Santa Fe, New Mexico. If convicted, Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. The film’s cinematographer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison in May, but is appealing the sentence.
